One of the Largest Banks in the World Will Stop Fossil Fuel Lending in by 2022

The European Investment Bank (EIB) in what some called a “game-changer” announced at the end of last week that it will phase out funding for fossil fuel projects by the end of 2021, dealing a major blow to oil and gas companies.  Instead, according to The Wall Street Journal, the bank will “use €1 trillion ($1.1 trillion) for climate-change action and environmentally sustainable investment by 2030 and help the EU reach 32% renewable energy across the bloc by 2030.”

Why This Matters:  We can think of 1.1 trillion reasons.  And this policy covers ALL fossil fuels including traditional natural gas projects.

Bernie Sanders Staking His Campaign In Iowa on the GND and Climate Change

Bernie Sanders Staking His Campaign In Iowa on the GND and Climate Change

Senator Bernie Sanders is seeking to re-frame his Presidential campaign in Iowa on the issue of climate change with a huge ad buy there touting his support for the Green New Deal (see below) and a climate summit to be held this weekend with Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez attending.

Why This Matters: Climate change has fallen out of the debate since the MSNBC climate forum in mid-September.  Sanders has consistently been in the top 3 candidates in Iowa so his focus on the climate issues will ensure that they are discussed again — and that is good news.

Moderate Dems Announce GND Alternative to Reach “100 by 50”

On Tuesday, moderate Democrats in the House of Representatives, led by Congressman Frank Pallone of New Jersey, announced at a press conference that they will develop a “concrete” new climate proposal as an alternative to the Green New Deal, with a goal of achieving 100 percent clean energy by 2050.  While it is not clear what will be in the “concrete” proposal, the lawmakers promised to consult with stakeholders in developing it, and it is less ambitious than the Green New Deal, which sets a goal of 100 percent clean energy by 2030.  The Green New Deal already has garnered 94 supporters in the House and has the support of all the leading Democratic candidates for President.

Green New Deal Picks Up Important Christian Endorsements

The Green New Deal has been labeled as an ultra-liberal (even socialist) policy proposal that has no shot of winning over voters in more conservative districts. However, in the past week, the resolution has picked up three important Christian endorsements. As the Huffington Post reported the Unitarian Universalist Association passed a resolution at its general […]

Old People Need More Energy, While GND Fires Up Young People

The New York Times reported on a new study published last week that found that older people are “significant contributors” to climate change because energy consumption increases with a person’s age, but also have experienced observable climate changes in their lifetimes.  Meanwhile, The Washington Post found that many state and local politicians are putting the Green New Deal (GND) label on their own proposals to halt the climate crisis because the GND is so popular with young voters, even though the Sunrise Movement (the youth organization whose protests sparked the proposal) often pushes back on these proposals saying they don’t go far enough.

Spain Says Sí to Green New Deal

Spain Says Sí to Green New Deal

Spain held Parliamentary elections yesterday, and though no party won a majority, the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party, or PSOE, and current Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez will win the largest percentage of the vote running on a progressive platform, of which an “ecological transition” that closely resembles the Green New Deal was a major plank.

The Intercept explained that Spain’s version of the Green New Deal includes:reducing emissions by 90 percent below 1990 levels by mid-century and generating all of the country’s power from renewables along the same timeline; mandating 74 percent of power to come from renewables by 2030;banning fracking nationwide, eliminate fossil fuel subsidies and government investments in fossil fuels, and phasing out fossil-fueled vehicles, with the aim of banning the registration and sale of carbon-emitting vehicles by 2040.
