Los Angeles Mayor Pledges Green New Deal for the City

It was Green Day in California on Monday because, in addition to Beto O’Roarke’s climate policy rollout, the Mayor of Los Angeles, Eric Garcetti, announced a Green New Deal for Los Angeles — a bold plan to deal with carbon emissions in the city, with particular focus on green buildings and zero-emission cars, which would remake the city which is known for both its traffic and its smog.

Spain Says Sí to Green New Deal

Spain held Parliamentary elections yesterday, and though no party won a majority, the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party, or PSOE, and current Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez will win the largest percentage of the vote running on a progressive platform, of which an “ecological transition” that closely resembles the Green New Deal was a major plank.

The Intercept explained that Spain’s version of the Green New Deal includes:reducing emissions by 90 percent below 1990 levels by mid-century and generating all of the country’s power from renewables along the same timeline; mandating 74 percent of power to come from renewables by 2030;banning fracking nationwide, eliminate fossil fuel subsidies and government investments in fossil fuels, and phasing out fossil-fueled vehicles, with the aim of banning the registration and sale of carbon-emitting vehicles by 2040.

The House Committee on Government Oversight held the first in a series of hearings on climate change, with former Democratic Secretary of State John Kerry and Republican former Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel both testifying that climate change presents “threat multiplying” security risks, and that intelligence and national security leaders of the last four Administrations (including President Trump’s current Director of National Intelligence and Secretary of Defense) have all been in agreement on this key point.
