Investors Are Betting on Tesla’s EVs

In less than a decade, Tesla has become the most valuable car company in the world — by a huge margin.  It’s value (market capitalization) yesterday topped $700B  on the news that it had reached its goal of producing 500,000 electric vehicles (EVs) worldwide in 2020.

Why This Matters: Tesla is now more valuable than the next 9 most valuable car companies in the world combined — that includes Ford, GM, Toyota, Honda, and Mercedes.

Consider these facts:

  • GM sold 7.7 million cars last year, but only 14,000 (as of the 3rd quarter) were Chevy Bolt EVs.
  • Tesla’s stock price skyrocketed by about 740%  in 2020 despite the pandemic.
  • Tesla’s value is also now well higher than oil companies ExxonMobil and BP.
  • When Tesla got a spot on the S&P 500 late last year, it booted Occidental Petroleum.
