One Cool Thing: Gen-Z Works the World

A generation of young people who have watched climate change take hold of the world over their lifetimes are taking bold action to make a difference: they’re making climate action their careers. In a 2020 University of Southern California survey, 64% of undergraduate students were “very interested” in on-campus sustainability and 27% responded “interested.”  The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that employment opportunities in environmental science will grow 8% in the next decade, faster than many other sectors. 

 

Most of all, members of Gen Z say they feel climate action is the only path forward. “Once you learn how damaged the world’s ecosystems are, it’s not really something you can unsee,” says 23-year-old Rachel Larrivee, a sustainability consultant based in Boston. “To me, there’s no point in pursuing a career – or life for that matter – in any other area.”
