Bike riders and commuters across the nation will be getting some special benefits for purchasing an electric bicycle. Included in President Biden’s $3.5 trillion budget plan is $7.4 billion in tax credits for e-bike purchases. The administration hopes that it can encourage more people to choose biking instead of driving to help curb transportation emissions, the largest emitter of any sector.
E-bikes aren’t the only vehicles receiving tax credits. Electric vehicle purchasers will also be able to benefit from new incentives. Still, these e-bike benefits are unprecedented, said Noa Banayan, a lobbyist for PeopleForBikes. “It’s absolutely thrilling. Anything in the billions is really a lot bigger than what we’ve seen before.” Fun fact: NPR reports Americans spent $681 million on e-bikes last year.
