Listen To This: Reaching Back to the New Deal for the American Jobs Plan’s Climate Corps

National Public Radio (NPR) did a terrific story on the climate corps to provide jobs for young people that the administration proposed in the American Jobs Plan.  The proposal provides for $10 billion to launch “The Civilian Climate Corps,” to address the threat of climate change by strengthening protections on public lands.

Fighting Climate Change and Environmental Justice Score Big Increases in Biden Budget Proposal

The Biden administration released its “skinny” post-election year budget plan for government spending next year and it included large increases for battling climate change and reversing environmental injustice, particularly as compared to the Trump administration’s drastic proposed cuts in these areas. 

Why This Matters: These are big increases over the Trump administration’s proposals — for NOAA it would mean 50% more.  But Congress never enacted those truly skinny budgets — they actually modestly increased or held most environmental spending steady.

Biden Climate Corps Has Roots In History

President Biden’s Climate Change Executive Order stated that it is the government’s obligation to “protect America’s natural treasures, increase reforestation, improve access to recreation, and increase resilience to wildfires and storms” and that the Biden administration will “put a new generation of Americans to work conserving our public lands and waters.” 

Why This Matters:  One of President Roosevelt’s legacies is the more than 130 public and privately funded conservation organizations providing young people and veterans the opportunity to serve our country through projects on public lands.
