McConnell Blasts Dems’ Demand That Latest Stimulus Package Include Green Provisions

The Senate was unable to agree on a bipartisan stimulus bill yesterday — negotiations apparently stalled because, among other things, the Democrats demanded that bailouts for airlines be conditioned on their lowering their emissions and that tax credits for wind and solar projects be extended.

Why This Matters:  After dragging his feet on immediate economic relief and adjourning the Senate over the weekend ten days ago, now Senator McConnell seems in a big rush to give billions to corporations while leaving workers and the environment out of the deal.

The Latest Climate Plan: House Dems Unveil an Outline of CLEAN Future Legislation

On Wednesday, the House Democratic leadership rolled out their answer to the Green New Deal — an outline of a proposal they call “The Climate Leadership and Environmental Action for our Nation’s (CLEAN) Future Act,” which adopts the science-based goal of transitioning the United States to a 100 percent clean economy – defined as producing net-zero emissions – by 2050.

On Tuesday, moderate Democrats in the House of Representatives, led by Congressman Frank Pallone of New Jersey, announced at a press conference that they will develop a “concrete” new climate proposal as an alternative to the Green New Deal, with a goal of achieving 100 percent clean energy by 2050.  While it is not clear what will be in the “concrete” proposal, the lawmakers promised to consult with stakeholders in developing it, and it is less ambitious than the Green New Deal, which sets a goal of 100 percent clean energy by 2030.  The Green New Deal already has garnered 94 supporters in the House and has the support of all the leading Democratic candidates for President.

Old People Need More Energy, While GND Fires Up Young People

The New York Times reported on a new study published last week that found that older people are “significant contributors” to climate change because energy consumption increases with a person’s age, but also have experienced observable climate changes in their lifetimes.  Meanwhile, The Washington Post found that many state and local politicians are putting the Green New Deal (GND) label on their own proposals to halt the climate crisis because the GND is so popular with young voters, even though the Sunrise Movement (the youth organization whose protests sparked the proposal) often pushes back on these proposals saying they don’t go far enough.
