Latest Polling Data Shows Climate Change Rising on List of Voting

A new survey shows climate change is rising on the list of issues that will impact who voters select when they go to the polls this year — and for liberal democrats, it is the most important issue.

Why This Matters:  Climate change is a key issue in the election and clearly an issue on which the Democratic candidate can appeal to independent voters, drawing a stark contrast with President Donald Trump.

Tim Albert, Politico’s Chief Political correspondent, broke the climate barrier and asked a climate question in the first hour. Interestingly, none of the candidates — not even Bernie Sanders — said the words Green New Deal.

Why This Matters:  It would have been debate malpractice for PBS and Politico to ignore climate change in California, where its impacts have hit the state hard.  All the candidates recognized that climate is an existential crisis, they were optimistic about the ability of the U.S. to innovate its way out of the crisis, and all of them emphasized the job-growth potential of transitioning away from carbon.

After extending negotiations for and additional 40 hours, global leaders were not able to find agreement on key issues such as an emissions trading market scheme, damages for countries that are negatively impacted, and raising ambitions on current emission reduction pledges.

Why This Matters:  No amount of extreme weather disasters, climate refugees, youth climate strikes or dire warnings from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was sufficient for the nations of the world to “get to yes.”

In a report published on Wednesday, the European Environment Agency said that Europe’s progress towards cutting greenhouse-gas emissions and boosting the share of renewables in the energy mix is not happening quickly enough and as a result, the EU will miss its goals.  Moreover, the EU can expect to confront heat waves that are more severe than recent record-breaking events every two years from 2050 on, The Telegraph reported.

Why This Matters:  The EU considers itself a climate leader globally and so missing these targets is a big deal.
