Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer Voted Against USMCA On Climate Grounds

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, as well as nine other Democrats including Senators Sanders, Whitehouse, Gillibrand, Harris, Markey, and Schatz, voted against the President’s U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) trade deal — Schumer rejected the pact because, “on the greatest issue facing our planet, addressing the climate crisis, the USMCA falls far too short.”  

Why This Matters:  It was a day that will go down in history because of impeachment, but Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer made history on climate change too — he voted against a major trade deal on climate grounds.

USMCA: How Green Is It?

Some environmental groups and Democratic Members of Congress are expressing regrets that the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade pact that the House is set to vote on this week does not do anything to address climate change.  However, the agreement does add language on protecting whales, fish and other marine wildlife from pollution and overfishing, according to a summary of the agreement in The Washington Post.

Why This Matters:  The USMCA agreement may not be very green, but it is blue-er than NAFTA for sure.  But some Democrats who are concerned about climate change will be studying the legislation before they decide whether to support it, according to E&E News
