After NZ Volcano Eruption, Should Adventure Tourism Be Better Regulated?

Last week, an eruption at New Zealand’s popular White Island volcano killed 16 people and it’s raised questions about why potentially dangerous tourist destinations aren’t better regulated for safety.

This follows a year on Mt. Everest where overcrowding from unqualified mountain climbers created dangerous conditions at the summit.

A Giant New Marine Protected Area In the Atlantic Is Announced

It may be a small speck in the giant Atlantic Ocean, but Ascension Island announced on August 24th that it would protect the nearly 170,000 square miles of its national waters — turning them into a gigantic marine protected area.  In support of that announcement, the U.K. government announced plans to set aside 7 million pounds ($8.5 million) for marine conservation in Ascension, which is a British protectorate.
