Demand For Ethanol Plummets Amidst COVID-19 Pandemic and Gas Price War

It’s not only conventional oil and gas that is suffering due to the pandemic and price war, demand for corn-based ethanol fuel has also plummeted by 20% — the lowest since the Energy Information Administration began publishing weekly data in 2010, according to the Houston Chronicle. 

Why This Matters:  The Clean Air Act requires every gallon of gas sold during the summer contains about 10% ethanol.

Sustainability Pledges Take Flight in Airline Sector

Delta Airlines (the world’s largest airline) and jetBlue have recently made big commitments to lower their carbon footprint, with Delta last week pledging to become “carbon neutral,” by 2030 and plan to invest $1 billion in achieving the goal, while JetBlue announced in January that it will be the first U.S. airline to pledge to offset all domestic flights beginning in July and United Airlines had previously committed $40 million to sustainable aviation development. 

Why This Matters:  If governments won’t force emissions to come down through regulation, then the fact that businesses are willing to make these pledges is even more significant.

The Hill reported yesterday, citing polling data and interviews with state Democratic leaders, that climate change has been widely discussed throughout the state with all the candidates in the run-up to the caucuses next week — it is a top tier issue because last year’s historic flooding has taken an estimated $2 billion toll on the state’s farmers and communities and because of the Trump Administration’s policies on biofuels. 

Why This Matters:  An overwhelming majority Iowans are convinced that climate change is real and they consider it one of the top issues facing our country — second only to health care.

Biofuels for Air Travel Waiting For Takeoff

Last week, leaders in the aviation sector met to discuss how to speed the development of the infrastructure and technology needed to wean airplanes off fossil fuels and onto biofuels instead.  Airplane manufacturers have until now focused on investing in improving the fuel efficiency of new airplanes, but because of the growth in air travel, those advances have not resulted in a decrease overall in carbon emissions from the air travel.
